Meet the BASIC Crew

Some people wake up and don’t know if they’re making a difference

These guys don’t have that problem

Jonathan Burgio

Jonathan is the Executive Director of BASIC and played Division 1 football at the University at Buffalo. He gave his life to God during his time in college. Once serving God, his first friends were part of the BASIC at the University at Buffalo. He played an active role in the UB BASIC for over 3 years. He was the first ever collegiate athlete to win the “Frank Reich Call to Courage Award.” Jonathan left his career as a Financial Advisor to work for BASIC in June of 2010. He now focuses on speaking at the many BASIC groups, networking with other churches, and organizing BASICcon. He has been the Executive Director of BASIC College Ministries since January 2014.

Nicki Burgio

Nicki is the Office Manager at BASIC College Ministries. In 2010, Nicki transferred to the University at Buffalo where she was a dual major in Political Science and International Studies. She quickly got connected with the BASIC Chapter on campus and served as a student leader for two years. After graduating, she served as the interim advisor for the UB BASIC Chapter for one year. During her time working with the UB BASIC, Nicki fell in love with college ministry and knew this was the next step that God had for her.

In 2013, Nicki and Jonathan were married and moved to Lima, NY to start working for BASIC full-time. Nicki now spends her time doing administrative work, planning conferences, coaching new and existing BASIC Chapters and loving on college students.

Selina Oquendo

Selina attended SUNY Oswego and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. It was at college where Selina started her relationship with Jesus and encountered BASIC. After being plugged in, Selina started serving at her BASIC Chapter as the worship leader and BASIC President. During her time serving, she grew a strong passion and burden for college students that only intensified through her time in college.

She started to realize that BASIC was more than an extracurricular activity; it was a part of her calling. At BASICcon in 2015, Selina felt called from the Lord to join the BASIC crew. She joined the staff in January of 2016 and now works with students in the Rochester area along with traveling, speaking and planning conferences. BASIC has been a huge part of Selina’s life and she feels a call to serve the young adult generation and show them the promise and life in Jesus Christ.

Chris Zeigler

Chris is the Assistant Director of BASIC College Ministries. He was a student leader with BASIC at the SUNY Oswego campus and has never lost his heart for college students since then. After working for a public television station, God spoke to him and his wife at a conference in the spring of 2009 about joining the BASIC Crew. Now he works advising new groups, planning conferences, blogging, traveling and speaking, among other things.

He and his wife, Cheryl, have also worked with volunteers from local churches to start BASIC groups on three campuses in the Rochester, NY area. They live in Lima, NY with their three children.

Sam DiStefano

Sam went to school at SUNY Geneseo and earned a degree in Childhood with Special Education. It was at college, through BASIC, that she learned what it meant to be a disciple of Jesus. Shortly after attending her first meeting, Sam experienced the BASIC conference and fell in love with the heart and mission of BASIC. She became very involved in her chapter, serving in leadership as Prayer Coordinator and Vice President, organizing events, and helping with outreach. With a hunger to pursue God more, Sam attended Elim Bible Institute after graduating.

In June 2014, she joined on staff and planted a chapter at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY that fall semester. BASIC has deeply affected Sam’s life and she feels called to help other students experience freedom and hope in Christ.

Cathy Allport

Cathy is the Financial Director for BASIC. She has been involved with BASIC since its inception in 1978 when she was a student leader at the State University of New York at Oswego. She has two daughters and lives in Lima, NY.
