Fall: A Time of Harvest

My wife and I moved to Lima, NY to work with BASIC in 2009. It’s a tiny town (really a village) with a population of just over 2,000. It’s funny how I never thought I’d live in a place smaller than the city I grew up in, which officially has a population of 18,000. Now that I live in Lima I’m pretty sure I can say I live in a place where the cows outnumber the people (I tried to confirm this as fact, but had no luck).

As I drive past the many farms sometimes I’m reminded of what Jesus says in Luke 10.

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.”

The Harvest is Plentiful

Jesus exhorted the disciples that the harvest is plentiful and I believe it’s still true today. The fall is the time of harvest for us in the Northeast and I believe it coincides perfectly with what God wants to do on our campuses. Will you join me in praying for a plentiful harvest on college campuses this fall?

The Workers Are Few

Even if you are a large campus ministry it’s nearly impossible to reach your entire campus through just the work of a few staff people or advisors, especially if college ministry isn’t your full-time gig. Let’s ask the Lord to ignite students with a greater desire to reach the lost than ever before.

Lambs Among Wolves

Just as Jesus told the disciples they were being sent out as lambs among wolves it is no different for students on college campuses today. We must pray for God’s protection and guidance as we go out to share the Gospel. There will be opposition, but if we remember Ephesians 2:10 we can trust that God will help us complete the tasks He has already prepared for us. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

I’m believing the Lord for a greater fall harvest of souls on campuses than ever before in BASIC’s history. I challenge you to join me in believing and praying for that for your campus. Let’s remember the number one reason we are in college ministry - to reach the lost.

I am the Assistant Director of BASIC College Ministries and have a heart for reaching college students through developing effective campus ministries.

I write to provide college ministers with tips and resources for better reaching college students. Most of the topics I'll address fall into the categories of better planning, outreach, and improving your large group meetings. However, I also write on other various topics for college ministry. You can see each post categorized by topic on the Tags page.

I post on this blog weekly. If you'd like to make sure you don't miss a post you can subscribe by RSS or email.

My Bio

My wife, Cheryl, and I have been working with BASIC full-time since 2009 and have helped start BASIC groups in the Rochester, NY area at SUNY Geneseo, Monroe Community College, and the University of Rochester. We use our experience from starting groups and traveling to the nearly 30 BASIC ministries to consult and advise churches looking to start new BASIC groups outside of the Rochester area.

I enjoy writing, reading, playing guitar and bass, and spending time with my wife and daughter. I'm also an avid sports fan and am known for having favorite teams all over the country from the Oakland Raiders to the Chicago White Sox to the New York Knicks. We live in Lima, NY just south of Rochester where BASIC has its headquarters.
