Free Ministry Leadership Training

One of the biggest challenges in ministry, and especially college ministry, is the challenge of raising up solid leaders. In college ministry it’s an ongoing process because of the high rate of turnover. So, when you do find leaders how do you train them and get them prepared for ministry in the fall?

It’s because of these challenges that I’m really excited to tell you about our 5th annual leadership event, BASIC Live, coming up on April 22nd. This year we have an incredible lineup of speakers. The even better part is, this training is completely free and you can view it online from wherever you’d like or join a Hot Spot in your area to watch with other leaders!

If you can’t join us the day of, there’s a way to sign up to watch afterwards. On April 22nd, the broadcast starts at 1 PM eastern time and will run till about 4 PM with breaks in between sessions. The Hot Spots start at noon with lunch provided.

Throughout the day we’ll be hearing from speakers like Onterio Green, young adult pastor at Bishop T.D. Jakes’ church. We’ll also hear from life coach Cindy Scott who will share coaching tips for working in teams and about how God has designed us. And there are so many others who will speak on topics of worship, raising up student leaders, discipleship and general leadership principles.

It’s going to be an incredible event! To learn more, find a Hot Spot near you and to register check out the BASIC Live page.

Top 5 Reasons Why I’m Excited For BASIC Live

If you haven’t heard the news yet, BASIC Live is happening this weekend! This is the third year of the only free online college ministry leadership training event, and I’m extremely excited to be a part of this year’s event for a few different reasons. If you haven’t registered to attend this event yet, let me share with you a few different reasons why you may want to reconsider.

1. Top-Notch Leadership Training!
For the last two years, I’ve walked away from BASIC Live feeling liked a champion. I’ve learned things about college ministry, I’ve been challenged on ways to think about college ministry, I’ve been fed ideas about how to be an effective leader on campus, I’ve been inspired to pursue a deeper relationship with God, I’ve been pushed to share my faith with college students in new ways, and so much more.

Each year, the team brings in amazing ministry leaders who not only talk the talk, they walk the walk. This year, I’m especially excited to hear teachings from Tim Matthews (who I watched preach an amazing message at a #BASICcon), and Stephen Lutz (I’ve read one of his college ministry books, and it changed the way I thought about my role as a college pastor in my students’ lives).

2. It’s On Your Computer!
Because this is an online event that you can watch right from your computer, you have the option to literally sit in your PJ’s and be a part of something awesome, if you’re not watching with your team of course. Either way, I do encourage you to dress like you would in public, it’ll make you feel better about yourself.

3. It’s a Shared Experience!
When you watch BASIC Live, you’ll be part of a network of tons of other people watching the same thing along with you across the entire United States (maybe even, the world)! Also, new this year to the BASIC Live experience are “Hot Spot” locations across New York State. This year, you can join other college ministry leaders in Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Long Island, and Oneonta for an in-person BASIC Live experience including games, freebies, food, conversation, live teaching, and more.

4. You Don’t Have to Plan Anything!
As a college ministry leader, you’ve likely spent the entire semester up until this point grooming your student leadership team with lots of hard work and carefully thought out leadership teachings. One of the greatest parts of BASIC Live, is that you don’t have to put much work into making it happen for your team. Just find a place that your group can get together to watch a projection of the broadcast, and you’re done!

5. It’s Totally Free!
You can’t beat that.

BASIC Live is happening this Saturday, April 25, at 1pm-4pm. For more information on how to register, speakers, hot spot locations, and more, visit thebasicsite.org/basiclive

Repost: 6 Reasons Why I Love #BASICcon

We’re gearing up for another amazing BASIC conference this coming weekend! I have the opportunity to head out to Rochester NY with a group of over 40 college students and young adults from my ministry at SUNY Oneonta to participate in what God will be doing through the conference this weekend. In reflection of how awesome these conferences are, I’ve decided to repost the following blog post that I wrote last year just before heading to a #BASICcon. Here are just 6 of the reasons why I love #BASICcon.

As a student who personally benefitted from attending BASIC’s biannual conferences with hundreds of other college students and young adults, as well as a college pastor who currently benefits from bringing my students to the conferences, I thought it would be appropriate to share a few of the reasons why I love #BASICcon.

A Sanctified Weekend. In my experience, there’s something really powerful about choosing to set aside an entire weekend for the sole purpose of getting to better know God and His people. Time and time again I’ve watched my students’ lives be changed on these weekends as they grow closer to our living Savior. There is no greater joy as a college minister.

New Best Friends. It seems like every conference we go to has amazing outcomes in terms of new, closely-knit relationships formed that would potentially not be possible otherwise. By simply sharing an entire weekend full of deep and passionate moments together (along with the silly downtime moments), new relationships are formed that will likely remain for years to come.

Ministry. BASIC does an excellent job at keeping its campus leaders deeply involved in the action. Every semester, we get the opportunity to pray for and minister to our students as they respond to ministry alter calls. These are special moments that bind you and your students long after these experiences.

Late Night Talks. One of my favorite aspects of these weekends is the discussion that occurs late at night, after an awesome teaching/worship time/ministry time. This is usually when guts are spilled, thoughts are processed, and more ministry takes place.

Meeting Other Leaders. At each conference, the campus leaders break out into a leadership session, where BASIC staff does a great job at keeping us informed on what the future of the ministry brings, and shares some valuable information about how to carry out our mission to our campuses. At these meetings, there’s an excellent opportunity to make new friends in ministry leadership who likely share the same pain points and joys that you do on your campus.

No Planning Necessary. I’ve been involved in college ministries before where I had to help plan and organize a retreat weekend’s worth of sermons, activities, entertainment, music, etc. While I think this is awesome, it’s really nice to be able to show up to a retreat weekend and have it all done for you, and with a level of excellence that I certainly couldn’t pull off!

There’s many more reasons why I love these conferences, but all in all, they make my heart happy because they provide my students with challenging teaching, powerful worship, and opportunities to grow closer together and with the Lord.

I hope to see many campus leaders at the conference this coming weekend!
