One of the biggest challenges in ministry, and especially college ministry, is the challenge of raising up solid leaders. In college ministry it’s an ongoing process because of the high rate of turnover. So, when you do find leaders how do you train them and get them prepared for ministry in the fall?

It’s because of these challenges that I’m really excited to tell you about our 5th annual leadership event, BASIC Live, coming up on April 22nd. This year we have an incredible lineup of speakers. The even better part is, this training is completely free and you can view it online from wherever you’d like or join a Hot Spot in your area to watch with other leaders!

If you can’t join us the day of, there’s a way to sign up to watch afterwards. On April 22nd, the broadcast starts at 1 PM eastern time and will run till about 4 PM with breaks in between sessions. The Hot Spots start at noon with lunch provided.

Throughout the day we’ll be hearing from speakers like Onterio Green, young adult pastor at Bishop T.D. Jakes’ church. We’ll also hear from life coach Cindy Scott who will share coaching tips for working in teams and about how God has designed us. And there are so many others who will speak on topics of worship, raising up student leaders, discipleship and general leadership principles.

It’s going to be an incredible event! To learn more, find a Hot Spot near you and to register check out the BASIC Live page.

Teaching And Bible Study Resource

I’m always keeping an eye out for helpful resources that you can put to use in your ministry. This one is a number of free videos that could come in handy when putting together a sermon or running a small group Bible study.

My wife has been participating in a D-Group the last couple months. If you’re not familiar with them they have gotten really popular and are a pretty cool concept for discipleship. As part of the Bible reading for these groups she had to watch a series of videos called Bible In Five.

These videos are what they sound like, short five minute videos that sum up parts of the Bible. While the teaching style can be a little dry at times, they do a great job of providing background, context and structure for the different books of the Bible. You could use these to inform your sermon prep time, show one to start your message or incorporate them into your Bible study to better explain concepts. Videos are great for keeping people engaged and these are a practical, concise way to do that.

Tim Mackie, who teaches the Bible In Five videos, also worked with Jon Collins to develop The Bible Project. This is a couple different video series. There are videos that are a little longer than the Bible In Five ones called Read Through Scripture that walk you through each part of the Bible.

These are illustrated and a little more engaging. It appears the funding for this project was never finished, so unfortunately there aren’t videos for the entire Bible, but there are still quite a few. There is also a series that breaks down key Biblical themes.

As you look over these videos you can see how they would be especially helpful for those who have little experience with the Bible or have not done any extensive Bible study. That’s probably the majority of students you work with. I also like how Tim and Jon tell the narrative that runs throughout the Bible and show the ways these stories are all part of one larger story.

Have you come across any other helpful resources lately? I’d love to hear about them! Please leave a comment below.

Start. by Jon Acuff is a great resource for college seniors to help them overcome fear as they get ready to graduate.

Resource For Seniors: Start by Jon Acuff

I’m always looking for great resources to recommend. Over the summer I read the New York Times bestseller Start. by Jon Acuff. As I worked my way through it (it actually wasn’t work at all due to Acuff’s offbeat humor), I couldn’t stop thinking about how every senior should read this before they graduate.

As students approach graduation there is always a mix of fear and excitement. After 4 years (or perhaps many more) of term papers, all nighters and an unhealthy amount of pizza there is a tremendous sense of satisfaction as you approach the finish line and look forward to getting that diploma. But there is almost always an equally strong sense of fear – fear of the unknown, fear of failure and fear of what the future holds.

The tagline for Start. speaks right to these feelings: “punch fear in the face, escape average, do work that matters.” Jon Acuff does an excellent job of helping the reader set aside fear and the other things that can hold us back from getting started. He encourages you to just get started at something and not over analyze it. Then he goes on to provide practical steps for how to do just that in a book that is a really easy read.

By the end, students will feel encouraged that they can go from average to awesome and chase after the dreams God has given them. This book is great for anyone, but I suggest that you at least recommend this to all your seniors, or better yet, buy them a copy.
